Bangladesh exports rebound in August, rise 13.14pc
Bangladesh’s merchandise export earnings rebounded in August this year, growing by 13.14 per cent year-on-year to $4.43 billion, after the country’s exports recorded only modest growth in the first two months of the financial year.
Export earnings stood at $3.92 billion in August 2025, according to the Export Promotion Bureau data published on Tuesday.
The strong performance in August helped lift cumulative export earnings in July-August of the financial year 2026-27 by 5.43 per cent to $9.16 billion from $8.69 billion in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
EPB stated that the August performance came amid a challenging global trade environment, with stronger demand in major markets and increased buyer confidence in Bangladesh supporting exports.
The state agency said growth was also supported by expanded production capacity, rising exports of higher-value-added products, and efforts to diversify both products and markets.
The readymade garment sector, which accounts for the bulk of the country’s merchandise exports, remained the main driver of the growth.
RMG exports increased by 13.92 per cent year-on-year to $3.89 billion in August, up from $3.17 billion in August 2025.
The sector’s earnings also rose 5.12 per cent to $7.50 billion in July-August of FY27, up from $7.13 billion in FY26.
Among the other major export sectors, performance was mixed compared with the same period of the past financial year.
Agricultural product exports declined by 9.1 per cent to $159 million in July-August of FY27, which was $175 million in the same period of FY26.
Export earnings from Jute and jute goods surged by 37.09 per cent to $163 million in the first two months of FY27, up from $119 million in the past fiscal.
In July-August of FY27, leather and leather goods exports increased by 12.58 per cent to $258 million from $229 million, while home textile exports grew by 11.17 per cent to $155 million, which was $139 million in the corresponding period of the past FY.
Export earnings from engineering products increased by 23.88 per cent to $130 million in July-August of FY27, up from $105 million earned in the corresponding period of FY26, EPB data stated.
