Iran and Oman agree temporary corridor for Strait of Hormuz shipping
Iran and Oman have agreed on a new temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, although Tehran says the waterway will not be considered fully reopened until the United States fulfils commitments under an interim peace agreement.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, said the agreed corridor would enter through Iranian territorial waters, with part of the exit route also passing through Iranian waters. The temporary route will be approximately 11.3 kilometres wide.
The agreement follows talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi in Tehran on Tuesday, where the two sides discussed the temporary navigation corridor and plans to clear mines from the strategic waterway.
