UECC and Titan forge pioneering biomethane partnership
United European Car Carriers (UECC) and Titan Clean Fuels (Titan) have solidified a new agreement to supply the majority of liquefied gas used by UECC’s multi-fuel ships with biomethane (LBM/bio-LNG) throughout the remainder of 2024 and much of 2025.
Building on their established collaboration, this agreement marks a significant step in their shared commitment to adopting LBM. Since 1 July 2024, over 95% of the fuel provided by Titan for UECC’s pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) has been LBM, successfully avoiding the emission of more than 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
Titan projects that the planned volumes of LBM for 2025 could prevent the release of over 75,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases—equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 10,000 EU residents or 540 million kilometres travelled by an average car.
Daniel Gent, Energy & Sustainability Manager at UECC, stated: “Through our CO2 registry, this agreement offers our customers the opportunity to significantly reduce their scope three emissions, and we appreciate those that have already jumped at the offer. Toyota Motor Europe, Ford of Europe and another major European vehicle manufacturer quickly signed up for Green Gas Month in July 2024, and following its success every month will now essentially be Green Gas Month.”
Additionally, transitioning to LBM instead of oil-based fuels virtually eliminates harmful local pollutants, such as black soot, particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx).
Daniel Gent added, “The engagement in Sail for Change from our customers, alongside Titan’s in-depth expertise in clean fuel supply and bunkering, has allowed us to almost entirely transition from LNG to LBM, and to swiftly scale up our use of biomethane. With this expansion, we look forward to hearing from more customers who want to reduce their scope three emissions and use sustainable shipping services today.”
Furthermore, this shift underscores the success of UECC’s Sail for Change sustainability initiative, enabling the company to surpass its carbon intensity reduction targets. These targets align with the metrics set by the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulations.
The adoption of LBM ensures UECC achieves over-compliance across its fleet, prompting the company to explore pooling and banking opportunities for further environmental and operational benefits.
This announcement comes on the heels of UECC’s investment in two new multi-fuel car carriers set for delivery in 2028, with an option for two additional vessels. Together with the latest biomethane agreement with Titan, these developments reinforce UECC’s long-term dedication to the LNG pathway and its transition to biomethane.
