Norsepower Rotor Sails Installed on Very Large Gas Carrier, OCEANUS AURORA
Finnish Cleantech company Norsepower announced the successful installation of Norsepower Rotor SailsTM to the Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) OCEANUS AURORA on 20th November. Calculations by Norsepower indicate that this installation will reduce fuel consumption and subsequent CO2 emissions by 4%.
The VLGC OCEANUS AURORA was outfitted with two rotor sails custom-designed for the vessel. These units are 20 meters tall and have a diameter of 4 meters. These units were installed in Rotterdam earlier this month.
Norsepower Rotor SailsTM uses a small current to rotate the cylinder, which in turn utilizes the Magnus effect to generate additional thrust.
The vessel is operated by IINO Kaiun Kaisha Ltd. and is on a long-term charter to Borealis, a provider of polyolefin solutions. The OCEANUS AURORA traverses the route between Houston, USA, Stensgurd, Sweden, or Porvoo, Finland.
The OCEANUS AURORA is a dual-fuel LPG ship that was built in 2023. The vessel was already fitted with the foundations for Norsepower rotor sails at the time of its delivery by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd.
